A Visual Wonder, but Epic Disappointment
"The opening of the second act with African-style music really adds to the production. Julie Taymor has directed a wonderment of animals that easily could have been portrayed in animal suits. One of the additional numbers appears to be taken from incidental music in the film. Rafiki is a woman from South Africa who speaks the dialects, and really has fun doing it. This was the one and only Disney musical I was really interested in seeing, largely because of my curiosity when it won Best Musical on Broadway in 1998.
One could easily tell that the writers attempted, sometimes in vain, to augment a 90-minute movie into a 2-1/2 hour musical production. But this is Disney, and even Disney has its limitations. Some scenes go on a little too long for my taste. However, as quickly as the idea pops into his head, it disappears, never to be heard of again. Additional songs are written by composers and lyricists other than Elton John and Tim Rice.
Overall, this is a solid production that obviously took a lot of time, effort, talent, and financing to put on. It is a great story. The actors and musicians deserved hearty applause, but I didn't think it deserved the standing ovation they received. But I still prefer the movie over this ambitious project. See it to quench your thirst, but It certainly did not leave me wanting more."
